There are certain foods that just instantly make you think of summer – watermelon, peaches, strawberries, anything bbq’ed, corn on the cob, and the list goes on. After making these strawberry lemonade bars, I’m definitely adding them to the list. They are absolutely amazing. There’s something about the sour combo of the traditional lemon bar with the sweetness of the strawberry that just makes you want to never stop eating these treats.

My Favorite Meal of the Week – Sun-dried Tomato Pasta Salad
Continuing from my post last Sunday, here is another great recipe for a Fourth of July BBQ! I used to think I didn’t like pasta salad, but turns out, I just don’t like the traditional mayonnaise based ones. But if you take out the mayonnaise, I’m a big pasta salad fan. A friend had made one last year for the Fourth that I loved, and after a lot of research I think I found a similar one.
The Most Patriotic Cake Ever – An American Flag
So if you’re hosting a little Fourth of July get together, or are in charge of bringing dessert to the BBQ you are attending, then pay attention. This cake is what you should bring. And the best part is that it’s really versatile. Even if you don’t get a chance to make it this week for the Fourth, you can make it another time! I’ve done it as two round cake layers for birthdays, and as a large rectangle that I decorated as a flag for the Fourth last year. I even just did it yesterday for the joint birthday party I threw (more pictures to come)!
My Favorite Meal of the Week – Tostadas
So before we get started, I have to share a very special picture with you that my dad just found this past weekend. I’ve decided this picture means that I was clearly destined to have a baking blog one day!
The adorable tyke in the red and white jumper is my younger brother, and the one on the stool is yours truly. This picture clearly documents an important teaching moment, that of the older sister to the younger brother about how to properly lick the bowl clean.
Ok, back to recipes. Today, I bring to you a HenderBarry family speciality – tostadas. We had these all the time growing up, and they were definitely one of my favorite meals. And I can see the appeal to my mom, fast and easy!
Strawberry Sour Cream Scones with Crumble Topping
I had to share the recipe for these scones because I used them as a bribe to get my awesome friend Sarah to help me with the redesign of my blog. So, since these scones benefited all of my faithful readers by giving you a much better blog to look at, here is the recipe. And seriously, they’re delicious.
My Favorite Meal of the Week – Paradise Bowls Copycat
When I was in Santa Barbara last summer, we discovered this fantastic breakfast place called Backyard Bowls. Since I avoid dairy and eggs, I often struggle to find healthy breakfast options when traveling (and quite often end up eating granola bars I snuck in my purse or baked goods). But this place was perfect for me. It had these bowls with blended fruit, oatmeal, açai berries, and fresh fruit on top.
I had yet to come across another similar place until I was in Manhattan Beach for a wedding two weeks ago. On a morning walk, I spotted a man walking on the street with a bowl that said Paradise Bowls and after some googling (and a little bit of stalking) I found the place. Their bowls were slightly different than those I’d had in Santa Barbara – they had granola instead of oatmeal – but they were still delicious. This time I decided to come home and try to recreate what I had at Paradise Bowls.
My version:
Chewy Chocolate Molasses Cookies
So you know my stance on cookies. The chewier the better. I do, however, make an exception for mollasses or ginger cookies. But now I’ve found a delicious chocolate molasses cookie that is chewy, so no more exceptions.
And here’s a little hint for when you make these, TRY the dough. It’s seriously amazing.

Welcome to the NEW home of The Petite Croissant…
Hi Everybody-
I am so excited that you are visiting my new site! I’ve spent so many hours making the switch and I’m really proud of The Petite Croissant’s new home (speaking of which, I should mention I had help from the lovely Sarah Layton). As you can tell, the design is entirely new (and I think much more festive and appropriate). But in addition to the aesthetic benefits of this new site, there are also a lot of exciting features that will hopefully give all of you, my readers, a much better experience.
New Features:
- You can now automatically sign up to get email alerts for each new post whether or not you have an account with my host WordPress. You’ll find the sign up box on the right hand side of the page.
- You can easily connect to my Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts in the right hand column.
- There is a new categories section in the right hand column to let you quickly get to specific recipes.
- Right below the categories, you’ll also see links to other blogs I like, as well as my recent posts.
- At the bottom of each new post, you’ll see buttons to share my post on popular social media sites. This includes a new PRINT IT FEATURE, which I’m really excited about. When you click this button, it will take you to a new page which will even let you select to print without pictures to save ink and paper.
- When you go to a specific post, you’ll notice links at the bottom to click left to the previous post, or right to the next post.
I’m so excited to be sharing this new site with you and I hope everyone enjoys it just as much as I do. Hopefully, there will be even more updates and changes in the coming months. Feel free to email me at thepetitecroissant@gmail.com with questions and/or comments.
Always,

My Favorite Meal of the Week – Popsicle Edition
So I’ve been eyeing those Zoku quick pop makers for over a year, but had so far convinced myself that it was just an extra kitchen gadget that I didn’t need. Well that is until last week, when I found one at a small kitchen boutique store in DC and decided that I had to have one. And while I have to say it is totally unnecessary because there’s nothing wrong with the old school popsicle makers, it is kinda fun. Last night I decided to make some last minute popsicles for dessert and they were ready in 10 minutes. Pretty fantastic. I plan to try out lots of fun recipes over the course of the summer, so you’ll likely see some more posts like this. But here’s the first.
Shortcake with Strawberry Rhubarb Compote
If you read my post from a few weeks ago, you know that I have been very excited about starting to bake with strawberries. I had plans to make regular strawberry shortcake this week for a dinner with a friend, but after seeing the world’s most beautiful rhubarb at Whole Foods, I had to spice up my plans.

In addition to adding in some rhubarb, I also tried serving the dish in two different ways, both shown below.
The traditional tower:

The less traditional (but also less messy) parfait:

And I have to say, even though the traditional strawberry shortcake has been my personal favorite dessert for a long time, I think I prefer it with both of the changes I tried this week (the rhubarb and serving it as a parfait).
